In order to catch feral or stray cats, you can use cages designed for this. Place the trap near where the cats regularly feed and cover it with a blanket, and bait the feline with tuna, sardines or cat food. Take the cat to a veterinarian to neuter it. This is a humane way to keep it from reproducing and control local cat populations. Know that once you bring the cat to the vet, you'll be responsible for it afterward. Prepare to take it home with you and to make sure it is fit/healed enough to live in the wild once the procedure is complete.
Never release a cat that is injured or anaesthetised into the wild (outdoors). When releasing it, do this in the same neighbourhood. As it will already feel traumatised, it is better for it to be in a familiar location. Also, males, even if neutered, will still serve the purpose of keeping strange males away from their colonies, and thus females that have not been yet neutered, will not have the opportunity to mate.

Should you want to use chemical repellents, you can choose one based on foul smells that cats do not like. Such a treatment must be repeated several times as to make sure the cats are discouraged from visiting that area again. The negative aspect of such a treatment is that some cats might get used to the smells its provides and they can build up a resistance, making the treatment no longer useful.
